Pre-authorization

Prior authorization sometimes called pre-authorization is a process that insurance companies use to ensure that your medications or procedures such as colonoscopies or CT scans are approved and will be covered in full or partially by your insurance company.

There are several ways to see if you will need it such as calling directly your insurance company, call or ask your pharmacy which will typically have a list on hand.

In the event you do not have a pre-authorization, call your physician and ask them if they received a call from the pharmacy and if it is approved. If not how long will it take and will this be an issue with your illness.

The purpose of pre-authorization is to control costs and preventing unnecessary procedures and medications being given as well as checking if a generic exists.
